With the Summer Olympic Games taking place in Paris, the 2032 Olympics seem far away. However, Brisbane was already awarded the 2032 games in July 2021. As of October 2021, ministers have been appointed and legislation has been passed to establish an organizing committee.
The bid process
A task force was created to determine the merits of hosting the Olympic Games and in February 2021, Queensland started a targeted dialogue with the IOC. It made its final submission to the IOC in May 2021. Brisbane was awarded hosting rights for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The IOC takes many factors into account when awarding these rights, including funding strategies and sports event experience.
The United States has hosted the Summer Olympics four times, and Los Angeles will host the games in 2028. It is aware of what it takes to bid and win hosting rights. US sports betting is likely to increase significantly with the opening of the Paris Olympics, the first to be held since the expansion of legalized betting. By 2028 and 2032, who knows how much it will have grown? Los Angeles has already proposed the inclusion of five new sports.
The Brisbane organizing committee
Sports unite nations and the Olympic Games are a wonderful example of this. Since being awarded hosting rights, the Brisbane organizing committee has been putting in considerable foundational work behind the scenes. The aim is to host inclusive, accessible, and sustainable Olympic Games. The 2032 Board is made up of 22 experts and leaders across a range of fields.
The committee collaborates with partners to organize events, including the torch relays, and the opening and closing ceremonies. It is currently battling against the public perception that it has wasted much of the additional time it was given to plan and prepare for the Summer Olympic Games. The IOC doesn’t appear to share these concerns about the pace of the preparations taking place.
Dr Andrew Liveris, president of the Brisbane organizing committee, says he takes personal responsibility for ensuring the Games are delivered on time, and on budget, and that ceremonies will have a distinct Queensland flavor.
Delivering infrastructure
Preparing for the Olympics involves delivering infrastructure to support operations. This includes temporary athlete facilities and amenities. Additional transport and security requirements are necessary and competitors, officials, and the media require accommodation. Upgrading and creating new sporting venues can establish a legacy for future generations.
The main Olympic stadium
An independent review of proposed venues for Brisbane 2032 will take place, and a new statutory body, the Games Venue and Legacy Delivery Authority, will manage major capital works associated with the Olympics.
A decision has been made to redevelop the Queensland Sport and Athletic Center to serve as the main Olympic stadium. It was originally built to host the 1982 Commonwealth Games. Other options were to redevelop the Suncorp stadium or to refurbish Gabba. Instead, the state will be spending $2 billion on the QSAC stadium and transport to get there as it is situated about 2 miles from the nearest train station. Many more renderings of the stadium will be offered as the project progresses.
A delegation to the Paris Olympics
Many viewers from all over the world will watch the Olympics live over the next few weeks. Dr Andrew Liveris will lead a big delegation from Brisbane to the Paris Olympics. It will meet with stakeholders and potential sponsors there. It will also analyze how Paris delivers and meets expectations on the Olympic project for which it had seven years to prepare.
Brisbane will be the first host city ever that can learn from two Olympic Games before it has to host its own. Hosting is expected to boost the Queensland economy by a significant amount. Brisbane is continuing to take steps that will lead to a successful and memorable Olympic Games in eight years’ time.
